One of the most popular Trappist breweries on the planet, Chimay has been brewing beer since 1862. Grab any one of their beers and lets compare.

7:45pm : St. Bernardus Abt 12

The St. Bernardus Abt 12 clocks in at 10%ABV so we’re opening last in our series of Belgian beers. This deep dark beer packs a fruity punch and an unmistakeable aroma.

This is going to be a great night. Tommy has volunteered to host this gents meeting at his place (not to far from Bridges) in his buildings cigar room. The theme is 2009 Great American Beer Fest Winners. Gold, Silver or Bronze. We’ve also decided to open it up to any GABF Gold medal winners from before 2009. But do your best to get winners from this year. There is a pretty long list of winners. So be sure to snatch up your favorites and comment what you’re bringing to minimize duplicates.

Dark beer night with the Fellowship of Gentlemanly Gentlemen. This week we’ll be sampling some malty and potentially strong brews. As always, the Gents is a BYObeer sampling event open to everyone. Please bring a suitable amount, that you can drink and be prepared to share with others. Also, Stouts and Porters are great compliment to cigar, so please feel free to pick up a cigar for the night. For those who do not smoke, we’ll be saving the cigars for last as to not interfere with the tasting. Please RSVP in the comments of this post.

Porter

Inspired from the now wavering English Porter, the American Porter is the ingenuous creation from that. Thankfully with lots of innovation and originality American brewers have taken this style to a new level. Whether it is highly hopping the brew, using smoked malts, or adding coffee or chocolate to complement the burnt flavor associated with this style. Some are even barrel aged in Bourbon or whiskey barrels. The hop bitterness range is quite wide but most are balanced. Many are just easy drinking session porters as well.
